Last chance to see Muse Hritage exhibition

The Musée Héritage Museum’s featured exhibition, titled Powwow!, is coming to an end next month.

Powwow! is a unique exhibition from the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery, which gives visitors to Musée Héritage the opportunity to see elaborate handmade regalia. Visitors to the museum will also learn about the importance of Powwows to many Indigenous communities.

Brochure printing can help promote important cultural learning events such as this one to wider communities.

Patrick and Marrisa Mitsuing, the curators of the exhibition, worked closely with Western Canadian and American Indigenous artists to showcase the meaning behind Powwows. “Powwow” means love and respect. The regalia that the dancers wear represent these two qualities. Powwows are part of many Indigenous cultures’ celebrations, where dance, song, and teachings are an integral part of the ceremony. Each style of dance tells a story and a specific purpose. Each dance style also has its own unique regalia and ornaments.

This exhibition is significant because powwows were previously banned by the Canadian government, making the reclaiming of this ceremony by Indigenous peoples extremely important.

Powwow! at the Musée Héritage Museum is on exhibition until November 26th. The museum is located at St. Albert Place, 5 St. St. Albert and is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Price of admission is free; however, donations are welcomed.
