Local authorities in Calgary have launched a pilot project designed to bring more recreational space to the downtown area of the city.
The program, called ‘sPark’ began on August 9 and will be in place until August 25. A Print company was called upon to produce some Signs which have been used to inform the public about what is going on.
The main park will be temporary and covers an area between 10th Street and 7th Avenue. Greenery was brought in, and modular furniture which can be moved has been installed. It is expected to give Calgarians a place to gather with friends and family members in the sunshine.
It is hoped that the project will help to bring people together in a pedestrian-friendly environment, providing a safe escape from the busy roads nearby.
In order to create a space for the park, the south end of 10th Street has been closed during the week. On weekends, the north end will also be sectioned off. This will allow more people to take part in the recreational activities on offer.
Parking at the north end of the block is still available on the west side of the street from Monday to Friday, while those who use the alleys on 9th, 10th and 11th Streets to access parking garages will find them open throughout the campaign.
The success of the park will be evaluated in the fall to determine if the pilot program should be adopted on a city-wide basis.
