Calgary tour to visit historic community cemetery

Historic cemeteries offer a glimpse into a community's past, and a tour has been organized that will visit one of these sites in Calgary.

An outing to Union Cemetery will explore the various grave marks that date back to the early days of the city. Advance registration is limited to 15 participants, as this will allow space for any walk-ins that are interested. The total number that can be accommodated in the tour is 25.

The free, guided tour will introduce how a cemetery can provide information about a city’s history and how it shaped its development. They can be used to trace the path of epidemics and natural disasters, and also indicate what sorts of professions were common. The symbols used on grave markers and their meaning will be discussed, and everyone who plans on taking part is asked to meet at Galloway House before they set out.

Organized outings like this give history buffs an opportunity to learn more about their community. A brochure printing company will be able to provide learning materials to distribute to the attendees so they will be able to explore cemeteries themselves after the activity has drawn to a close.

This introduction to cemeteries and how they can provide insight into a community's history is scheduled to depart from the meet-up point at 2:00 pm on May 29th.
