Calgary to ease wastewater treatment woes

Calgary is a growing city, and as such, it is placing greater demands on its existing infrastructure. One of the areas that will require an upgrade is the city’s waste water treatment. Now, the council’s Utilities and Corporate Services committee is recommending that $126 million be allocated for improvements to the Bonnybrook wastewater treatment plant.

The funds will be divided between increasing the facility’s capacity and modernizing its equipment. It is part of the $690 million that will be needed by 2022 if it is to keep up with the expected increase in population.

When the plant was built, it was designed to handle growth at a rate of 11,000 more users per year, but Calgary has proved to be such attractive city that the rate has reached 29,000. This is putting a strain on the system, which could lead to a breakdown if the repairs and improvements are not made.

The committee has prepared a report that will be presented to council at the special strategic planning meeting scheduled to take place on March 17. This is ahead of the budget talks, which are set to begin in November.

When a city undertakes a project of this size, organization is a key factor in bringing it in under budget.
