A group of more than 20 young Aboriginal people from Calgary were recently honored at city hall.
The youngsters were presented with the Chief David Crowchild Memorial Award to recognize their efforts in helping to forge connections and understanding between indigenous Canadians and non-Aboriginal people in the city.
According to Levi First Charger, who is a coordinator with the Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth, the participants, who are all 18 or older, participated in the project to share their stories about their past involvement in the child welfare system.
Each member of the group had a chance to express their thoughts and feelings through a variety of artistic media, including dance, painting, beading, and drawing. Their efforts have been displayed in Calgary, and have also traveled to Toronto.
The Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award was also presented to Macyn Morning Bull, who is a student at Henry Wisewood High School, for her efforts to make a difference in her community.
