Calgary landmark to undergo significant upgrade

The St. Louis Hotel, which is a historic feature of Calgary’s past, will soon find a new life as a home to restaurants, offices, and other commercial establishments.

The building was built in 1914 and was designated as a Municipal Historic Resource in 2008. It has been vacant for the past 10 years, but the plans are for a restaurant to be installed on the first floor, while the top two floors will be revamped into space for offices.

The total price tag for the project is expected to come in at between $8m and $9m, and if the developers stay on schedule, work will be completed by the June of 2016.

Under an agreement with the city, the Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) will be undertaking an assessment of the buildings on the same block as the St. Louis, to determine their structural stability and to see what can be saved and what will need to be replaced.

The organization will also assess how the site will be marketed to prospective business tenants. A Print company can produce all the promotional materials that may be needed to market it to those interested in relocating to the area.

According to the CMLC president and CEO, the neighborhood is the entrance to the downtown and East Village areas, so it is important that it is in the best shape possible.
