Calgary hotel bids farewell to long-serving employee

The staff at one of Calgary’s most popular luxury hotels held a special reception recently to honor a well-loved employee who announced his retirement after welcoming guests for more than 40 years.

Aged 65, Brian McConnell has decided it’s time to bring an end to his impressive stretch of employment at the city’s Fairmount Palliser Hotel. He began working there when he was just 24.

Due to a problem with muscle coordination stemming from a bout of bacterial meningitis when was just a baby, work was sometimes a challenge for Mr McConnell. He has, however, built a reputation for greeting guests with a smile and keeping the spirits of his colleagues up.

During his long career, he was able to make the most of many special opportunities. During a royal visit, he was able to see Queen Elizabeth up close and in person, for example. When the 1988 Olympic Games took place, he was also able to meet some of the athletes.

His former colleagues and hotel officials paid tribute to his hard work and dedication, and noted that he will be greatly missed. The director of human resources at the hotel, Janet Jacques, explained how his co-workers could count on him to be happy and his confidence and pleasant personality always shone through.

During his time working at the Fairmount, several of Mr McConnell’s relatives were also employed there, a number of whom were on hand at the special ceremony to help him celebrate.

The organizers of receptions like Mr McConnell’s often work with local printing companies to create Banners and certificates to add personal touches.
