Warehouse giant Costco looks west for future expansion

Residents of Osborne Park, Western Australia, and other suburbs close to Perth City could benefit from Costco’s plans to open a store in the area.

Having already established major wholesale outlets at Docklands in Melbourne, Casula in New South Wales, Queensland’s North Lakes, Adelaide, and Australian Capital Territory, Costco is now looking west to Perth as a future host of one of its major stores.

According to Costco’s Kyla White, company officials had already visited the Western Australian capital to investigate possible locations for consideration.

She said expansion into Perth at a later date was certainly a possibility, although she was unable to confirm a timeline, saying it could be several years away.

Costco has already attracted a strong membership base from WA residents, some of whom travel interstate to shop at the wholesale giant’s stores. Members worldwide total more than 60 million.

The stores operate under a unique membership system through which individuals or businesses become cardholders, which allows them to purchase discounted goods individually or in bulk. Low overheads mean prices are kept down.

Flyer printing is often used to advertise goods for sale.

Costco is not the only multi-national company to be searching for potential sites in Perth, with German supermarket chain Aldi also on the hunt.

Aldi this year announced it would be investing $80 million into an estimated 80 stores throughout the state in coming years, with the first planned for Joondalup.
