Use of electric vehicles revs up in Stirling

The era of electric vehicles (EVs) has been mobilised locally, meaning that residents in Balcatta and throughout Stirling City are now able to see four of them in use by Council members and staff.

Among those trialling one of the new EVs is Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin, who is set to drive the new Hyundai IONIQ EV to business and community meetings.

The move to EVs has been made as a positive step towards sustainability and to help reduce emissions, according to the Mayor who added:

“The City of Stirling has a bold and comprehensive plan to reduce emissions in line with our Sustainable Energy Action Plan 2020 – 2030 (SEAP), which commits to reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2050 by first achieving 100 per cent of our electricity from renewables and 70 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030.”

He said a key action towards achieving the targets was for the City to transition its fleet of vehicles to EV and use renewable energy to power them.

The topic of EVs and its benefits to the environment have been the focus of many brochure printing campaigns across the country in recent years.

Their introduction in Stirling is the next step for the city, which already uses hybrid cars for 85 per cent of its fleet. Using EVs on a daily basis is expected to reduce the cost of energy consumption by half.
