Step out for a month of fun at the Fringe Festival

The Fringe World Festival kicks off today and aims to provide a cultural experience on a budget for those from Freemantle to Osborne Park, Western Australia, according to director Amber Hasler.

She said there will be something to suit a wide range of tastes, including a collection of free 60 Second Fringe shows at Brookfield Place and impromptu performances by roaming artists.

The action will be available at various venues across the city and as far away as Fremantle, but city goers can check out the Perth Cultural Centre’s Urban Orchard and the Pleasure Garden venue on James Street.

Hasler said the iiNet rickshaws would also be taking people between the venues each Friday and Saturday night for free – a sight that could be used in promotional postcard printing.

Kids have also been catered for with the Perth Cultural Centre hosting free matinee shows for children under 10.

On February 14, the centre will turn on the projectors to screen a dozen heart-themed short films for Valentine’s Day. There will also be a free public commitment ceremony for couples.

Hasler said although not legally binding, the ceremony is certain to be a lot of fun.

Performers will also combine for a night of shadow puppetry, animation, human puppetry and live music in Fremantle.

The festival runs from January 23 to February 22.
