Nominations open for outstanding local citizens

Residents of Balcatta and across Stirling City are being invited to nominate a local hero for the latest Community Citizen of the Year awards.

Nominations are now open for the awards, which give local government areas a chance to acknowledge and pay tribute to people who work hard and contribute greatly to the local community.

Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin said the awards programme was well supported, as it represented a positive way to encourage and celebrate people within the community who continually make outstanding achievements for the benefit of locals. He added:

“As a City, we have been pushed to change and reform in order to provide services in new and more efficient ways, and we have been able to do great things in partnership with thousands of local heroes who stepped up to the challenge that COVID-19 has brought.”

Irwin said that adversity not seen in generations had been endured during the past two years, but it had, in fact, brought out the absolute best in many people and revealed some real local heroes in the process.

The award categories include three Community Citizen of the Years for over 16 years, under 25 and 65 or over, respectively, as well as an additional award for Active Citizenship - event or group.

Flyer printing campaigns have often helped to spread awareness of major community awards such as this one, which is held annually and announced on Australia Day. Nominations close on 31 October.
