MAX light rail project still on track

Despite divisive opinions on the construction of the Perth MAX light rail, it is still on the agenda.

Previous suggestions to ditch the project were met with a mixed response. Some fear a light rail will compromise road projects and pedestrian safety. Others, such as Stirling Mayor David Boothman, believe light rail will be ideal for Osborne Park and Scarborough Beach.

Light rail has been gaining favour due to skyrocketing fuel costs and concerns about the environment. It is expected to fill a void between the carrying capacity of heavy rail and buses.

It appears the project will be going ahead, with the $15.8 million state government funding still in place. The project is certain to take centre stage in an election year, with major parties providing transport options as part of party strategy.

Brushing aside concerns about light rail serving the Perth CBD, the transport minister for WA, Troy Buswell, confirmed that MAX is fundamental in his plans for future transport systems in Perth. He said:

“We are committed to future proofing Perth’s transport system by taking it into a new era with an innovative light rail system.”

Buswell expects a light rail system connecting the suburbs and city will facilitate up to 25,000 commuters per day. Construction could be completed by 2018.

Businesses in affected areas, such as Osborne Park Print companies, are sure to play a part in discussions by provision of poster printing and Flyers advertising the pros and cons of the MAX light rail project.
