Kids to take up mini chef challenge

Children from Balcatta and throughout the City of Stirling will have an opportunity to put their chef’s hat on during the next school holidays as part of a special cooking programme.

Run by Council, the ‘Mini Chef’ sessions proved to be successful following a hit trial in March. The first culinary classes were held for 6 to 11-year-olds in April at Stirling Leisure Centre in Hamersley and will now continue for the July school holidays.

The programme represents a great introduction to cooking for young people who want to be able to cook up a treat at home or, alternatively, to one day have ‘Executive Chef’ on their Business Cards, with tutors providing tips and instructions on cooking basics and kitchen hygiene.

Milo balls and sausage rolls are among a host of popular treats cooked up by enthusiastic young chefs.

According to Mayor Mark Irwin the classes, which are part of the Kids Holiday Sports Programme, have proven an instant hit with the area’s youngsters, adding:

“We wanted to provide a kid’s program that was something a bit different to our established sporting activities. Cooking was a good fit as it can boost children’s self-confidence by giving them a sense of responsibility and there’s the achievement of being able to eat the results with their family and friends, saying I made this.”
