City of Stirling Council recently voted in support of the site's full redevelopment to allow a more user-friendly and new-look facility for use by the public.
According to Mayor Mark Irwin, the centre has several shortfalls including having only one exit and entry point, which in itself often causes congestion. The original bailing station and now Waste Transfer Station, which has been operating for four decades, has had its day and now needs to be replaced.
An upgrade, said the Mayor, would be most welcome and ensure easier access for community members to the facility's many recycling services. He added:
“The redevelopment will reshape the facility into three distinct areas, with a new free community drop-off section that will also offer a container deposit scheme refund point. All up, it’s going to provide excellent facilities for residents.”
Flyer printing services have often helped to make residents aware of services such as the Recycling Centre Balcatta. The facility, once revamped, will offer a free Community Drop-Off where materials for re-use or recycling can be left.
There will also be a Paid and Pass Community Drop-off for waste as well as a Waste Transfer Station for bulk and commercial waste.
Council expects work to develop a design to begin later in the year and construction to be underway by late 2021 or early 2022.
