High standard set at 2019 Art Award winners

Young Balcatta artist Rachael Woodward has emerged victorious at the recently announced 2019 City of Stirling Art Awards.

Judges awarded Rachael the Young Artist Award, which was sponsored by Jackson’s Drawing Supplies. They described her digital work, entitled ‘There Once Was …’, as being innovative across a number of media in the creation of an engaging narrative.

The category also saw Jessica Whiteman’s ‘Diffident’ highly commended. Meanwhile, Damien Goerke announced as the award’s coveted ‘Acquisitive Award’ winner with a mixed media drawing entitled ‘Primary’.

Deputy Mayor Bianca Sandri said judging was tough due to the high standard of entries, the calibre of which also sparked the introduction of highly commended awards. This effectively added to the number of certificates for presentation at the City of Stirling 14th Art Exhibition opening recently. Events like this can use professional printing services for various materials needed.

Councillor Sandri said the outstanding quality of entries was illustrative of the city’s developing and thriving arts community, adding:

“The City is proud of its commitment to developing, promoting and supporting art and artists and we are excited to be adding Primary by Damien Goerke to the City’s art collection through the Acquisitive Award which attracts $5,000 in prize money.”

Also included in the list of winners were Painting Award winner Norm Wilson, a collaborative Sculpture Award win by Kerry O’Flaherty and Kate Rae, and Julie Silvester for her captivating work in pastels entitled ‘Morning Begins’.
