Heritage and history award winners announced

The preservation of local heritage in Balcatta and across the City of Stirling has been in the spotlight recently with the announcement of the winners of this year's History and Heritage Awards.

The competition runs over a period of two years and calls for projects that promote or preserve the community's local heritage to be entered by residents, groups and business owners. Categories included Youth, History and Heritage. According to Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin, the awards attracted an impressive array of entries.

He said the city's diverse and rich history contributed to making the area such an interesting and vibrant place to visit, work and live and the awards were a great way to celebrate the past and continue to enjoy its legacy today.

Entries covered a wide spectrum and ranged from Federation villas, small businesses, community-run facilities and home extensions to infill developments.

Joint winners in the Heritage section included the renovation of Mount Lawley's iconic property at 49 Clotilde Street and the restoration of Karrinyup's Featherby House. A renovation that saw the interwar character of a home in Menora conserved and retained was highly commended.

Heritage properties such as these have often been the focus of brochure printing campaigns that list places of interest throughout the local community.
