Future of Scarborough redevelopment now in hands of MRA

Residents of Western Australia’s Osborne Park and surrounding areas within the City of Stirling are set to benefit from a $60 million redevelopment of Scarborough.

Previously in the hands of the local council, planning control has just been transferred to the Main Roads Authority (MRA) to which all development applications will now be forwarded.

The massive project area covers 100 hectares. The MRA has adopted the City’s original planning framework, but will take into account future vision when considering development applications.

The State Government’s Planning Minister, John Day, said the two bodies were united in their vision for the popular destination.

Flyer printing to encourage locals to have their say on future plans for the area generated a good response.

The receipt of almost 3,000 ideas to enhance Scarborough’s future in a recent survey will culminate in the release of a draft master plan in the next few months.

Mr Day said the input from residents would assist in determining the final steps towards facilitating contemporary urban design, improving beach access for the public, and addressing community needs.

Already, the City of Stirling has taken action by installing lighting, public art and free Wi-Fi along the beachfront. The area has also successfully hosted major events including the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships and the Summerset Arts Festival.

In addition new shops, cafes, and bars have opened along the strip to cater for those enjoying a day on the beach.
