The city has joined with 11 other councils in the WA Tree Festival campaign to raise awareness of the role trees play within the urban environment and the negative impact the reduction of trees could have in the future.
Partnering with Stirling to stage the festival, which will run until 9 May, are the cities of Swan, South Perth, Perth, Melville and Albany, the shires of Serpentine-Jarrahdale and Kojonup, towns of Victoria Park and Bassendean, plus the East Metropolitan Regional Council.
Taking action to remedy the disappearance of tree canopies across the neighbourhoods is vital, according to Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin, who said the warming climate made trees essential. He said they not only make places feel and look better, but also provide wildlife habitat and help everyone cool down, adding:
“Together with our partner local councils and WALGA, we intend to highlight the importance of daily connections to nature and the often-invisible benefits trees provide, and to promote understanding around tree canopy loss, climate change and how individuals can help.”
Leafy green trees have also been a popular inclusion on many marketing materials, ranging from Business Cards to logo designs. The WA Tree Festival incorporates everything from wellness activities and plant giveaways to talks, trails, art installations and workshops.
