Extra patrols to keep beaches safer in summer season

Osborne Park residents who visit Scarborough Beach during the hot summer months will have noticed an increase in the number of security personnel.

Until March 2016 extra parking officers and beach inspectors from the City of Stirling will combine with police to patrol the area’s hot spots in and around Scarborough Beach, including car parks in an effort to address illegal parking and diffuse antisocial behaviour.

Mayor Giovanni Italiano said patrols would begin midmorning and continue through to the evening, and operate on public holidays, weekends, and at special events.

Similar undertakings in the past have proven very successful according to the Mayor, who said Council maintained a zero tolerance to all Forms of anti-social behaviour, such as the drinking of alcohol on the beach.

He said that while it was expected that the majority of beach-goers would pay attention to the Signs and be responsible, the extra patrols would be on hand for any people who failed to comply.

The Mayor said the security measures would include parking and sand patrols, as well as live CCTV coverage to help identify any potential troublemakers.

As an additional method, he said, visitors would also be able to report any incidents by calling the security hotline on 1300 365 356.

He urged those who plan to visit the beach not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to swim between the flags, keep beaches beautiful by not littering, wear suntan lotion, and refrain from drinking alcohol.
