Entries called for biennial art awards

Artists in Balcatta and across Western Australia are being invited to enter this year's 15th biennial City of Stirling Art Awards.

The council is seeking new and original works in various mediums, with entries set to feature in a major 10-day exhibition. Local artists who are working and living within the city will be a particular focus of the displayed artworks.

In a statement, the Mayor of Stirling, Mark Irwin, said he was excited about the upcoming awards, which he said will provide an excellent opportunity for locals to engage with culture and art, while also showing the council's support for the area's artists. He added:

“Council has placed a concerted focus on supporting the arts and culture industry throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and we recognise the importance of continued initiatives such as the Art Awards and Exhibition as part of the City’s commitment to building a vibrant and connected community.”

Exhibitions such as this have often been the focus of brochure printing campaigns highlighting major events in the city.

The previous winner of the awards, held in 2019, was Damien Goerke of Perth, who took out the Acquisitive Award with his mixed-media drawing entitled ‘Primary’.

The closing date for entries is 24 September. Artists who are shortlisted by the judges will receive a notification on 8 October. This will be followed by a presentation of the awards on the opening night of the exhibition, which is scheduled to run from 29 October to 7 November.
