A celebration of people living as part of the Luo community in Balcatta has been scheduled.
The Luo is an ethnic group hailing from west Kenya, northern Tanzania, southern Sudan, southwest Ethiopia and Uganda.
Most Kenyan-born Australians will speak English and Swahili at home, although some will still practise the Luo language. Ramogi refers to the name of the forefather of the Luo, who is believed to have settled on Got-Ramogi (Ramogi’s Hill) when he left Sudan.
Organised by the Ramogi Australian Association, the annual Ramogi Night unites the Luo community and other diverse groups in the City of Stirling in Balcatta. All relatives and friends are welcome to attend, and the evening is a celebration involving the sharing of food, dancing and cultural heritage.
Music is important to the Luo community and serves many functional purposes. The Benga genre of music is popular and involves songs in either a native dialect or English, accompanied by a guitar riff, rather than using the more traditional nyatiti and orutu instruments. It also produces a popular dance rhythm and style, some of which may be displayed at the Ramogi Night.
Interested parties may be drawn to the party as a result of flyer printing within the community.
Ramogi Night 2024 will take place on Saturday, 11 May, starting at 4pm, and run until midnight. The venue can be found at 5 Vasto Place, Balcatta. Tickets cost $125.
