Cultural celebration scheduled for Balcatta
Organised by the Igbo Association of Western Australia (IAWA), the New Yam Festival is a huge celebration for the Nigerian Igbo people. It marks the end of the harvest and the start of a new season, and those living in or near Balcatta are invited to celebrate.
This is a cultural landmark for the IAWA. All are invited to share in the colourful celebration by dancing, eating and enjoying the entertainment that stretches throughout the event.
The Igbo people started arriving in Australia from Nigeria in the 1980s, firstly as students and latterly as skilled workers. It was the early 2000’s when numbers greatly increased due to the rise in mining activities in Western Australia. The IAWA began in 2009, when residents decided to form a supportive organisation that would also help sustain their heritage. The New Yam Festival is a fitting place to showcase the Igbo culture by means of folklore, art, drama, music, dance and food.
Today, the IAWA has in excess of 300 members and a language school. Colourful poster printing to advertise local events like this one can often be undertaken by local print shops.
The IAWA 2025 New Yam Festival will take place on Saturday, 8 November, from 5 pm until 11 pm. The venue is the Sicilian Association, which can be found at 1 Fortune Street in Balcatta. Tickets cost from $75.
