Countrys top Indigenous artists work on show

Traditional and contemporary artworks which featured in the Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards 2013 are on show at the Art Gallery of Western Australia until January 27 next year.

Hundreds of patrons, from not only neighbouring suburbs like Osborne Park, but also from far and wide have filed through the gallery to view the exhibition since it opened on August 23.

Founded in 2008, the Western Australian Indigenous Art Awards are among the most famous Indigenous arts prizes in the country. They were initiated to acknowledge the excellence, diversity and breadth of talent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Adult Indigenous artists who reside in Australia and work in any media or theme are able to enter the awards which cover a wide area of interests ranging from sculpture, ceramics, photography, fibre art and painting on bark, paper and canvas to digital media.

Among the exhibitors will be this year’s major award winners Brian Robinson of Waiben (Thursday Island), Queensland, and Churchill Cann of Warmun, Western Australia.

The works of 16 finalists are on display and each artist has a chance to be voted as the People’s Choice Award winner and take home a cash prize of $5,000. Visitors to the gallery can vote on site or online and entries close at 5pm, Sunday January 12 with the winner announced on January 15.

Photographs of the works have featured on many high quality Brochures and Flyers produced by local printing companies to promote the exhibition to the many tourists who seek out cultural events and displays during their visit.
