Although still to be formally endorsed, a wave park has been mooted by the council to help revitalise a key site and to support development, economic uplift, employment and tourism.
The city centre of Stirling has been a key priority of the council for the past decade, with a number of infrastructure projects planned to turn it into a high-density, vibrant centre and major CBD north of the city of Perth.
Ideas to enhance the city centre precinct would be welcomed by the council, according to Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin. He added:
“The idea of a wave park aligns with Council’s intention to provide high quality community infrastructure within the Stirling City Centre and there is huge potential for tourism, local jobs, economic benefit and development for this area.”
The mayor said the area had a significant surf culture and that inconsistent coastline surf breaks and busy beaches would be countered by the establishment of a wave park in the area.
Irwin stressed, however, that substantial community projects such as the wave park would not proceed without community consultation. If supported, proposals such as this would often include a graphic design to ensure the full extent of the development was clear to all residents.
The wave park concept has the support of Stirling MP Vince Connelly, who believes it will stimulate job creation and tourism.
