Balcatta is among a number of suburbs in the City of Stirling to be targeted by a project to create improvements in local housing design, tree coverage, natural areas and lifestyle.
Considerable consultation with the community over several years contributed to the Better Suburbs project development, which sets out a long-term plan for Westminster, Nollamara, Mirrabooka, Dianella, Balga and sections of Yokine, Tuart Hill, Hamersley and Balcatta.
The visions outlined in the strategy encourage a focus on housing, jobs and investment growth, a continued focus on residential areas that cater for larger households and families, increased tree coverage and more opportunities to help increase overall liveability.
The council gave the strategy its endorsement recently, as well as supporting an amendment to the scheme that advocated the rezoning of properties in and near Nollamara Shopping Centre, Mirrabooka Village and Balga Plaza. Expected to become effective late in 2020, the amendment will permit the introduction of new retail outlets, public plazas, increased residential density and additional tree coverage on public and private land.
The ultimate design of a new plaza, proposed for Nollamara Shopping Centre, will be subject to community consultation, which is expected to begin soon. Projects such as this often also involve the creation of a detailed graphic design to ensure points of interest are clearly defined.
Mayor Mark Irwin said it was important that the Better Suburbs visions reflect the priorities and needs of community members.
