City leads way in container recycling scheme

During the past five months and with the help of residents from Balcatta and throughout the City of Stirling, a recycling milestone has been reached.

Stirling City Council recently announced that the area's refund point for the Containers for Change scheme had beaten all others across the state to process in excess of five million containers.

The scheme, which was introduced in an effort to reduce litter and increase recycling and recovery, offers a refund of 10 cents for each container that is eligible and returned to a refund point approved by the government.

The local refund facility is located on Balcatta Road and provides a full drive-through service, complete with an express drop-off point for Bags. The service goes a step further in also providing jobs for people with a disability.

Mayor of Stirling Mark Irwin said aluminium cans have topped the list of items returned and glass is second, followed by containers made of clear plastic. He added:

“Across the state, we use more than 1.3 billion eligible drink containers each year and as the largest local government authority in Western Australia, it’s important for us and our community to get behind shared recycling efforts.”

Flyer printing campaigns have often been undertaken to spread awareness of fundraising opportunities such as this within the local community.

Secure bins for the collection of eligible containers, together with a dedicated pick-up service, are also provided by the council for upward of 200 sporting clubs, businesses, community organisations and schools throughout the city.
