Call for recycled phones reaps rewards

The recycling efforts of residents in Balcatta and throughout the City of Stirling have led to Council receiving a Local Government MobileMuster award.

Recently announced, the City won the 2019 Award for Top Recycler for WA – a title it has now claimed in four of the last five years. It seems media reports and poster printing campaigns that promote recycling are being noticed.

The win was achieved through local efforts to recycle, rather than throw away, old mobile phones, with the City of Stirling coming out on top with the most components of mobile phones collected from May 1, 2018 to April 30, 2019.

Not only did the local total of 300kg top the collection pile at the awards, but it also surpassed the City’s recycling tally for last year of 244kg.

Mayor Mark Irwin was delighted with what is the third win in succession, and said:

“A big focus for the City is diverting waste from landfill and its programmes like MobileMuster that help us work with the community to make it happen.

“Everyone that got behind the program can be proud that they’ve helped the City lead the way in Western Australia when it comes to mobile phone recycling.”

The City of Stirling hosts in excess of 12 collection points for the Mobile Muster, which includes all city libraries, Balcatta’s Recycling Centre and Council’s Administration Centre.
