Artificial reef to boost fishing in northern suburbs

Fishing enthusiasts in Balcatta and throughout the northern metropolitan area are set to benefit from the installation of a new $1 million artificial reef off Ocean Reef.

The aim of the new artificial reef, which has been purpose-built, is to create easily accessible, safe and unique recreational fishing adventures along the coastline of metropolitan Perth. The location, which covers approximately 150,000 square metres and sits 27 metres deep, is about 7 kilometres offshore from the City of Joondalup's Ocean Reef Marina.

Minister for Fisheries Don Punch said the creation of an artificial reef has many advantages for fishing enthusiasts, particularly those along the coastline of the northern suburbs who enjoy diving and recreational fishing. He added:

"Artificial reefs are a great way to enhance recreational fishing by providing safe and easily accessible fishing locations for species such as yellowtail kingfish, samson fish, silver trevally and pink snapper."

Punch said that together with Recfishwest, the Western Australian Government had selected the location off Ocean Reef, which is expected to attract visitors while also maximising the benefits experienced by local users.

Attractions such as the new reef have often been included in brochure printing campaigns aimed at promoting top local spots to tourists.

Other artificial reefs are located in Exmouth Gulf, Esperance, Rottnest Island south, Mandurah, Bunbury and Dunsborough, with another one planned to be established off Albany in the near future.
