Swimmers and fans of swimming in the Balcatta area will likely be keen to be in attendance for some of the Aussies over the next two months. Such sporting events are often advertised within the local community from literature produced at Stationery printers.
The Aussies refers to the annual Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, where Australia’s 314 surf clubs compete in beach and ocean events. It is the largest event of its kind in the world, involving the skills required to lifesave, including water and beach skills, first aid and team events.
Surf lifesaving was introduced here in Australia in 1906 by Lyster Ormsby, who used a cotton reel and two hairpins to demonstrate his invention. He was a member of Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club and, with fellow members, John Bond, Sig Fullwood and Percy Flynn, came up with an idea for something that could be used for surf rescues. This consisted of a reel in a frame resting on the sand, from which a life saver would attach a harness, swim out, then attach the harness to a troubled swimmer who could then be reeled in.
The Australian Surf Life Saving Championships will take place from 25th March until 2nd April at the Scarborough Surf Life Saving Club and the Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club.
