What's Happening in West Melbourne, VIC…

West Melbourne crafters to learn leatherwork

Craft fans in the vicinity of West Melbourne might enjoy learning how to use leatherwork to fashion a dog collar for their pooch, or a leather belt.

Alison Rosoman-Berton will be running the course. She trained at the Cordwainers College in the UK and is also qualified in rural saddlery and as a veterinary nurse. After she arrived in Australia in 1985, Rosoman-Berton has been involved in making saddles for the mounted police, as well as dog muzzles and dog harnesses, using only traditional skills.

The techniques taught by Rosoman-Berton on the day can easily be learnt in the allotted time frame. The steps will include tanning the leather, skiving, staining, creasing, stitch marking and hand stitching. With the completion of either a waist belt or dog collar to take away, those attending will be able to continue the leatherwork journey should they so wish.

Community events like this one are often advertised by using local printing services.

The Traditional Leatherwork: Dog Collar or Belt is taking place on Monday, 3 November from 10 am until 4 pm. It will include a lunch break. The venue is Leffler Leather, which can be found at 171 Kensington Road in West Melbourne. A place costs $165. All tools and material will be provided, and the course is suitable for beginners or those with some experience.
