Artist Winsome Spiller will be using his skill to create a feeling of place, both from life, memory and reimagined. The exhibition contains new works in mediums including cardboard, sand, collage, plaster and painting.
Referencing his response to atmosphere, the pieces draw on his feelings about a place, sometimes working from photos, maps, materials such as dust or purely from memory.
Spiller, who used to work as a town planner, has said:
“These works stem from my interest in places – whether particular places I have remembered or photographed; my home city imagined from historic maps; or places that are imaginary…”
He also believes that his works are free to be interpreted personally by the viewer, as they draw their own conclusions after consideration of the art.

Winsome Spiller: Seeing Place is an event that is being hosted at Gallery 1, West End Art Space, 112 Adderley Street, West Melbourne, from 11 am until 4 pm, at selected dates between 1 and 22 August. Entry is free, and the opening reception takes place between 2 pm and 4 pm on Saturday, 1 August.
