Plans to modernise West Melbourne to be considered

West Melbourne is set to be reinvigorated with a new look Spencer Street and at least 10,000 square metres of open parkland to be made available to the public.

The West Melbourne Structure plan will soon see its master plan being gazetted after council made the request for Richard Wynne, the Minister for Planning, to nominate a panel and begin consideration of current submissions.

The plan will see West Melbourne transformed and divided into five new and distinct regions, with these being; Flagstaff, Adderley, Historic Hilltop Station Precinct, and Spencer Street.

The revamp will include maintaining the historic buildings of the area while providing outlets for artistic endeavour, new retail, educational and residential developments. Public, green spaces are likely to be created around the Queen Victoria markets area.

The highlight of the changes will be the re-creation of Spencer Street to a new West Melbourne high street, with an extension of tram and bus services to connect to Arden and Footscray. The high street will be re-zoned to allow more restaurants, shops and cafes to be built. Promotional Products can be used for new and existing businesses to promote their services.

Station Precinct is to be modernised with both retail stores and eateries being built around the newly named, West Melbourne train station. The area will also boast contemporary buildings such as warehouse conversions as well as maintaining its heritage homes.
