Plans revealed for Marvel Stadium makeover

West Melbourne residents are set to benefit from a planned $225 million transformation of nearby Marvel Stadium.

Recently released designs reveal plans to open up the venue to the city by transforming it into a major community meeting place that will feature a Town Square, as well as new restaurants, bars and cafes.

Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula said that implementing the designs would be a win for everyone, from sports fans to family and friends getting together at the precinct. He added:

“This project will turn Marvel Stadium into a true community asset – a fantastic place to watch the footy or catch a big act but also a place to gather and enjoy being part of Melbourne.”

Rail travellers arriving at Southern Cross Station will be able to access the new plaza at the Town Square via the footbridge from Bourke Street. The area will be ideally suited to community gatherings and markets, while also providing hospitality businesses across two levels that can be used by the public or be converted into areas for ticket holders of concerts and AFL matches.

Popular venues such as this are often highlighted in brochure printing campaigns that promote the city to tourists.

The move to refurbish the function and public areas and provide a stadium extension on the City Edge will also provide visitors with Melbourne CBD views. Pending project approvals, work is expected to begin in mid-2021.
