What's Happening in West Melbourne, VIC…

Grant uptake boosted for local artists

West Melbourne residents will be among many to benefit from arts projects currently underway across the city.

Melbourne City Council has provided $300,000 in grants to 78 arts projects as part of its innovative programme, Quick Response Arts Grants.

The latest grants have showcased the vibrant art scene that exists within the city, according to Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp.

The Lord Mayor said applications for the latest grants programme were up by 2,000 per cent when compared to pre-pandemic levels, showing the excitement and commitment of local artists in wanting to reignite Melbourne with their artistic works. She added:

“With so many quality applicants, we have quadrupled our funding for this round, which will create employment opportunities for about 800 creative professionals.”

Artistic projects like those currently being created have previously become such popular fixtures that they have often been included in brochure printing campaigns aimed at tourists.

The Portfolio Lead for Creative Melbourne, Jamal Hakim, said the smaller grants allocated for short-term assignments has been supported by artists, playwrights, musicians and peak organisations for their ability to build artist skills, confidence and portfolios. He said many grant recipients were receiving them for the first time.

The list includes a $4,000 grant to a youth music group, and another to Joe Monteleone, who will use the funds to create 12 linoleum prints set to feature a tram within the city circle and one of Melbourne's iconic train stations.
