The land is adjacent to the Franklin Street stores, and will have excellent views over Flagstaff Gardens in West Melbourne. The proposed development is set to accommodate 1,100 new residents in 600 dwellings, with 25 percent slated for affordable housing. The site is also expected to add between 220 and 500 new car parks for the markets area.
Design guidelines for the site call for no supermarket or generic grocery competition to the specialty food offerings that characterise the Queen Victoria Market. Printing services can be used to support a range of activities for large-scale developments, from community consultation through to Flyers to promote new businesses.
In announcing the plans, Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp referenced the expected economic benefits of the development, which are particularly important given the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on inner city areas. The development is expected to benefit Melbourne’s economy by around $520 million, including the provision of 1,050 additional jobs throughout the construction phase, and an estimated 3,000 jobs on an ongoing basis. According to Capp:
“Queen Victoria Market is one of our most iconic destinations and delivering more housing on the doorstep of the market will attract an estimated 326,000 extra visitors shopping at the market each year.”
It is anticipated that the development project will be completed over the next three to five years.
