Delegates on a mission to create business opportunities for Melbourne

City of Melbourne areas, including West Melbourne, have been represented in a contingent of companies sent on a business mission to Japan and China.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the mission’s aim was to building on Melbourne’s global standing in the areas of life sciences, clean technology and sustainable urban development.

Together with Victorian Government and council representatives, participants were involved in 170 separate business matching meetings, including key research centre site visits and networking opportunities with key industry leaders.

The idea, according to Lord Mayor Doyle, was to create import and export opportunities.

The world class development and research capabilities of Melbourne in the area of health were also showcased at Medical Japan, which is the country’s largest trade show and medical conference, with delegates taking along brochures and excerpts from medical industry newsletter printing, along with other useful information to help spread the word.

The 2016 delegation was led by the Lord Mayor, who said Japan and China had been identified in Council’s economic development framework as a strategic priority.

He added that local companies that took part were encouraged to build new relationships during the trip, which focused on creating and closing opportunities in regard to exporting. It was hoped significant commercial relationships would be formed.

Victorian Trade Minister Philip Dalidakis said Melbourne had operated a dedicated business office in its sister city of Tianjin, China for 17 years, and had also enjoyed a sister city relationship with Osaka, Japan for many years.
