Community urged to help make city a better place

Residents, visitors, students and workers of inner West Melbourne, Victoria and surrounding areas are being asked to take part in a Place for People study.

The City of Melbourne is keen to find out about everyday experiences of people within the local neighbourhood.

A similar study was undertaken in 1994 to gauge how people used the city’s public spaces.

According to Mayor Robert Doyle, the study has become a once in a decade experience with the results contributing to future planning within the city.

He said the aim was to gather information about the ways people access daily needs, including groceries, food, community services, recreation and education.

This year’s study has seen an expansion of the subject area to include docklands and the entire area of Southbank.

Mayor Doyle said it was believed broadening the study would provide stronger evidence to support the findings.

He said the initial studies had effectively contributed to the reshaping of popular public spaces, as well as urban design throughout the city.

The rapid growth of the city made identifying the way it functioned now even more important as decisions on its future were being determined.

Media reports and flyer printing is hoped to encourage the community to take part in the study, which will end on April 26.

Feedback can be made via popups erected across the city, or via the council’s interactive neighbourhood online survey.
