City unveils Melbourne Awards finalists

The Royal Melbourne Hospital, based in Parkville, West Melbourne, is one of 22 finalists in the city's 2020 Awards.

At the outset of COVID-19, Dr Martin Dutch, an emergency physician, came up with a software solution that changed the method by which patients are triaged, screened, treated and monitored, effectively reducing the immediate strain on health services.

Lord Mayor of Melbourne Sally Capp said all 22 finalists are champions in their own right, and they were selected from a field in excess of 200 group and individual entrants. She added:

“It’s been a tough year but so many people have shown care and compassion towards their fellow Melburnians. This year’s awards are all about recognising our community heroes.”

The Melbourne Awards were introduced to honour role models who make outstanding contributions within their field of endeavour to benefit the community. Each is uniquely inspiring, and they represent a vast array of interests and skills.

This year, the finalists range from fashion retailer Fella Hamilton, which started making face masks for members of the community and equipment to aid workers within the healthcare field, to the online weekly music festival Isol-Aid, which streams live music and supports workers and performers within the music industry.

Award entrants and businesses, many of which have a highly recognisable logo design within the community, must have shown generosity, kindness and leadership throughout the coronavirus pandemic. The announcement of Melbourne Award winners in this special “COVID Heroes” themed year will take place on November 21.
