Call for creatives to apply for 2016 arts programme

The City of Melbourne is encouraging artists and organisations to enter the 2016 Arts Grant Programme.

Councillor Rohan Leppert, chairman of the Arts and Culture Portfolio, said applications were now being received with entrants vying for up to $20,000 across three categories, which included Indigenous Arts projects, Residencies and Arts Projects.

He said the prize money went towards funding one-off projects, and applications were being received from across the city, including West Melbourne, Victoria.

A series of Arts Residencies are being offered for the first time this year, and Cr Leppert said successful applicants would be given a rare chance to work within the framework of the council's Creative Spaces and Arts and Heritage Collection Programme.

This experience, he said, would allow them to expand and develop their practice in an art form specific to the individual's speciality.

Creative pursuits are considered an important part of Melbourne, according to Cr Leppert, who said the city was renowned for its arts, which was a reputation council wanted to maintain for many years to come.

Extensive brochure and flyer printing throughout the city often advertises arts and cultural exhibitions and events regularly.

The councillor said artists received the grants to help them trial, develop and action ideas and projects. He encouraged the arts community to apply for the programme before the June 15th deadline.
