Boyd Fraser, a local Toorak resident, has come up with an idea to reduce the chances of cyclists being hurt, or even killed, when careless drivers open their car doors without checking if the road is clear first. His idea is to have a sticker manufactured by printing services and placed on wing mirrors to remind drivers to look for bike riders before opening their door. Mr Fraser asked for Stonnington Council to join the campaign for these stickers, which he says would cost only 7 cents per car, to be made mandatory.
“It’s a sad fact, but people are not looking for bikes when they step out of their car and stickers will give that simple reminder,” he said.
According to James Holgate, Vic Roads safety director, the mirror sticker is not a new idea. 'Look out for cyclists' stickers were used in the year 2002, but interest in them did not last.
Tracey Gaudry, the CEO of Amy Gillett Foundation, countered that stickers could be easily and cheaply distributed.
“It can be as simple as an extra sticker with your registration. It’s very easy to implement,” said Ms Gaudry.
Mr Newton-Brown commented that ideas suggested by the Facebook group could be taken to the Minister of Transport.
