Musical comedy fans in and around Prahran will look forward to a revitalised production of Guys and Dolls in August. Poster printing is often the medium by which plays are advertised locally.
Guys and Dolls opened on Broadway in 1950. It has had many revivals and is a firm favourite among musical-theatre lovers, spawning classic songs such as Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat, Luck be a Lady and Guys and Dolls.
The plot centres around unlikely character pairings; a gambler, Sky Masterson, and a missionary, Salvation Army Sergeant, Sarah Brown. Gambler Nathan Detroit issues a bet to Masterson to have dinner in Havana with a woman of his choosing. Detroit chooses the unlikely Brown, who agrees to have dinner with Masterson, in exchange for him providing sinners for the mission. Whilst the couple are away in Havana, falling in love, Detroit uses the premises of the Salvation Army to hold an unlicensed craps game.
Eventually, as the result of another bet, the gamblers go to the mission to repent their sins. The play ends with a double wedding, that of Masterson and Brown, plus Detroit and his long-time fiancé, Miss Adelaide. The Antipodes Theatre Company’s version will once again prove that love conquers all.
Guys and Dolls is taking place at The Chapel Off Chapel, 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran, 3181, from 10th until 19th August, inclusive. Tickets cost from $50. The performances start at 7.30pm, except on Saturday 12th August and Sunday 13th August, where there is additionally a matinee at 2.30pm.
