The Sand Hill Group, the owner of a number of iconic Melbourne hotels, recently completed an eye-catching revamp of the Prahran Hotel, costing over $2 million.
The unique fit out includes an unusual architectural component: a feature wall constructed by stacking huge concrete barrels together to create an internal-external showpiece.
The hotel is another feather in the cap of the Sand Hill group, who will continue in a similar vein with a $2 million restoration of Abbotsford’s Terminus Hotel.
The Prahran Hotel upgrade, designed by Techne Architects, has received international acclaim for its unique design. The oversized concrete barrels have been lined with wood to create port-hole style windows facing the street. They weigh four tonnes each and are large enough to accommodate tables, chairs, and intimate lighting for patrons to enjoy the view. The barrels harmoniously blend with the hotel lobby, where modern angular design is softened by warm wooden tones.
The hotel is just one of many historically significant buildings in Prahran, which is one of Melbourne’s oldest shopping and business strips. The famous art deco façade of the hotel is uniquely offset by the new extension which suggests the appearance of beer barrels stacked together. The suburb continues to undergo a revamp and is seen as a special part of Melbourne for cutting edge arts and entertainment.
