Prahran to embrace romantic musical

Theatre-goers and especially musical lovers in the Prahran area will have the opportunity to watch a much-coveted stage show this summer. With a score penned by Pasek and Paul, famed for their work on Dear Evan Hansen and A Christmas Story, Dogfight will soon be arriving on stage in Chapel Off Chapel for a run in November.

Dogfight is a musical that was adapted from the 1991 film of the same name. Concerning a band of fresh-faced marines, the show starts with the youngsters planning to spend a rowdy and debauched “last night” in San Fransisco, before being shipped out to Vietnam. The main protagonist, Birdlace, has his preconceptions challenged when meeting a shy waitress.

On returning from Vietnam, an older and world-weary Birdlace seeks out Rose again, to try and straighten the record and make amends for his previously unkind behaviour.

When the musical last played in the UK in 2014, a review from The Guardian stated:

“…this is a cleverly written and hugely enjoyable show, with a lovely folky score… so often, it is the women’s strength that prevails when all that macho posturing has burned away to nothing.”
