Those with an interest in horticulture in the Prahran area may wish to buy tickets for the Plant Propagation Workshop at the end of May. Printing services are often used by local interest groups as a means of reaching interested parties.
Propagation, at a basic level, involves the creating of new plants. With human intervention, a single parent plant is used with techniques such as cuttings in order to produce a plant that is identical to the parent, as there is no exchange of genetic material.
The workshop, led by Kate Scanlon, instructs the enthusiast into reasons for propagation and the means by which it can be carried out on houseplants, for example, vining, wedging and division. This will be followed by re-potting. Plants that are easy to propagate include Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), Snake plants (Sanseveria) and the much-loved Spider plant (Chlorophytum Cosomum).
Kate Scanlon specialises in rare and exotic plants and is a member of the Aroid Society of Australia. Scanlon began her plant journey and subsequent obsession when her son was born and she needed to fulfil a creative need.
The Plant Propagation Workshop takes place on Wednesday, May 31 from 6.30pm until 8pm. The address is 128 Greville Street, Prahran. The cost of a ticket is $95, including plant food and any propagations carried out in class.
