Those local to Prahan who are fans of the spoken word can immerse themselves in everything linguistic this month at the open mic night entitled Talking Blue.
Hosted at the Blue Bar, Talking Blue is arranged by the Vibe Union Melbourne Creative Collective. Akin to a poetry slam, entrants can read a piece of their own creation, with an approximate five-minute time limit.
Marc Smith, an American construction worker, is said to be the founder of the poetry slam in the mid-1980s. Smith felt that poetry needed performance and to be less elitist so that it would have a wider, more engaged audience among a whole community. In a typical poetry slam, a poet will recite a poem that reflects a personal passion, and although props are not allowed, the reader can improvise and use parts of the body to accompany their reading, for example clapping or beat-boxing.

Talking Blue is open to all, regardless of gender, age or physical ability. It takes place fortnightly on a Wednesday, and the dates for May are the 11th and 25th, from 7 pm until 11 pm.
