Petition held in support of Prahran campus

Following the announcement of the closure of Swinburne University campuses in Lilydale and Prahran, a petition set up last month gained in excess of 10,000 signature.

Students, staff, and other residents in the area who were simply concerned about the cuts added their names to the petition, which was presented to the shadow education minister on September 12, with those in attendance no doubt armed with flyer printing and poster printing to support their case.

As well as concerns over the possible loss of jobs and decrease in student intake, the accessibility of the campus was also cited as a reason not to close it, as well as the role it plays in assisting children and theatre arts schemes in the area.

If the campus is to close as planned, there is at least a possibility that it may continue to be used for education. Back in July, news broke of the suggestion that the site may be used to set up a high school, with Liberal MP Clem Newton-Brown and Peter Clifton, principal of South Yarra Primary School , among those stressing the need for a high school in the area.

Courses at Praham campus will continue until 2013 but, after this, much will depend on the success of campaigns such as last month’s. However negotiations proceed on the matter, the large and well-situated building is sure to have a use and will continue to offer an outlet to local traders, Print companies and other nearby businesses.
