Roads painted pink and blue, street side decorations such as pop-up dining areas and changes in traffic flow are among the features of an initial three-month trial in Prahran, which has recently been approved for a three-month extension.

The changes, which are part of Stonnington Council’s improvement plan around Porter, Granville and King Streets, have received a mixed reaction in the local community. While there has been criticism, with Facebook groups set up and even Flyers sent out in protest at the changes, there has also been enough positive reaction to encourage the council to extend the trial.

Feedback from the community has been taken into account going into the new trial period, which will run from September until November, and there are expected to be changes made in line with the criticism of some aspects of the project.

Stonnington Council acting Chief Executive Geoff Cockram made it clear that the plans had been made through discussions with local businesses, and said that:

“The materials and treatment used in the trial are temporary only and are a suggested example of what proposed changes are possible for the area.”

One of the key factors behind the trials extension was to take in the warmer weather over the coming months, with the increased visitors and feedback helping to make the final decision on the project more informed.
