New photography competition to showcase top mobile snapshots

Photographers are being called on to capture the places, faces and lights that make up the lively nightlife of suburbs within the City of Stonnington.

The challenge – which covers the areas of South Yarra, Windsor, Toorak, Malvern, Glen Iris, Armadale, Kooyong and Prahran, Victoria – is part of the City’s inaugural Glow Winter Arts Festival.

World leader in mobile photography Misho Baranovic will head the judging panel for the Shot in the Dark photography competition. His street photography has been the focus of major exhibitions in California, New York, and Berlin, as well as locations in Italy and France, and he has also published an eBook called ‘iPhone Photography: How to Shoot, Edit and Share Great Photos’.

A total of 40 images will be selected to create a walking exhibition, and the top snapshots will feature in retail windows throughout the city.

New technology known as ‘augmented reality’ will be used to display the exhibition. This will allow the public to utilise tablet or smart phones to view the collection.

Category winners will be awarded $500, with runners-up receiving $150.

To provide ultimate exposure, free gallery hire will be provided for the winner at Melbourne Polytechnic, while the individual crowned ‘Most Promising Photographer’ will receive free equipment and studio hire.

Flyer printing and information on the city’s website are popular marketing tools to advise the area’s residents of the Glow Winter Arts Festival’s full program of events, which will take place from August 14th to 24th.
