Bonsai is the ancient Eastern art of cultivating tiny trees in containers. Bonsai requires regular seeds and then uses methods such as root reduction, pruning and potting to restrict the growth of the plant and mimic the shape of full-grown trees.
Although the term has now come to refer to other small Forms of potted plants, Stephen Orr of the New York Times says:
“The term should be reserved for plants that are grown in shallow containers following the precise tenets of bonsai pruning and training, resulting in an artful miniature replica of a full-grown tree in nature.”
The hands-on bonsai class includes the basics of the art, such as selecting a pot and a tree, wiring, re-potting and pruning. The final result will be a tree to be taken home and nurtured - one that may become a family heirloom. With patience and skill, it is possible to mimic a mature tree closely.
The Bonsai Class for Beginners takes place on Saturday, March 11, from 11am until 1.30pm. The venue is Botanicah, Commercial Road, Prahran, VIC. Tickets cost $160.
