Hair entertains a whole new generation

The rock musical ‘Hair’ enjoyed a resurgent run at Chapel Off Chapel during February, continuing to resonate with audiences across several generations. In the latest production, Prahran local Ashley Rousety, who is 24, takes on the lead role of Claude, a flower power youth dealing with the turbulent 1960s.

Although Rousety was born decades after the hit show began in the United States, he was keen to play a part, hoping he may be hired as an understudy. He said:

“I guess I went in all guns blazing because it was a show I really wanted to be involved in and somehow I got the lead role.”

Hair is a story of revolution set in the bohemian surroundings of New York City, with a darker under story of conscription and the Vietnam War. Many of the issues remain relevant today, such as the polarising nature of war and religion.

Although confrontational in nature, Hair is probably most easily recognised by the string of classic songs serving as the soundtrack. Numbers such as ‘Aquarius’, ‘Hair’, ‘Good Morning Starshine’, and ‘Let the Sun Shine In’, mean that the Hair experience lives on long after the final curtain call.

Hair memorabilia is known to fetch top dollar in collectors’ auctions around the world. Collectables and promotional works, such as Posters and artefacts, continue to garner interest from all spectrums of society. No doubt printing companies in the area were called upon to create promotional posters for the show’s run.
